Appointment of Independent Persons
Job description
TEIGNBRIDGE DISTRICT COUNCIL
LOCALISM ACT 2011
STANDARDS
APPOINTMENT OF AN INDEPENDENT PERSON(S)
The Localism Act 2011 provides the statutory framework for regulating the conduct of Local Government Members. As part of that framework Teignbridge District Council has established a Standards Committee the primary purpose of which is to maintain high
standards of conduct and probity by Members of the Council. The Committee also advises the Council on monitoring and revising its Code of Conduct, assists Members in observing that Code and deals with complaints about the behaviour of District, Town and Parish Councillors.
Can you weigh up conflicting evidence and reach an effective conclusion? Are you of integrity and good character? Do you have respect for others and an understanding of diverse ethical issues?
If the answer to the above is yes, you may be just the person we are looking for to act as an Independent Person advising the District Council’s Monitoring Officer and Standards Committee on the outcomes of investigations or proposed responses to any complaints received.
This is an opportunity for the right person to make a real contribution to the fairness and integrity of the Council.
The appointments will be effective from 25 July 2023, sine die. To be eligible to be an Independent Member you must NOT:
• be, currently, a member or officer of the District Council, or Town and Parish Councillor within the district, or a co-opted member of a Committee of the Council or have been a District/Town/Parish Councillor, Co-opted Member or Officer of the Council in the last 5 years.
• be a relative or have any close links with any District or Town/Parish (within Teignbridge District Council) Councillor or Officer which might lead people to question your independence.
Appropriate training will be given.
There is an Allowance of £50 per complaint. Travelling and subsistence expenses will also be paid.
If you are interested in applying or want to find out more about the role please email Paul Woodhead paul.woodhead@teignbridge.gov.uk or Sarah Selway sarah.selway@teignbridge.gov.uk
Applications should be submitted Monday 19 June 2023.
